Prospective Parents Information

PHILOSOPHY:

The Deep Cove Parent Participation Preschool has a “play-based” philosophy: through play, children learn about the world around them. Each area of development – social, emotional, physical and intellectual — is enhanced through play.

PARENTS INVOLVEMENT IN A COOPERATIVE PRESCHOOL:

This is your school and your input is welcome! You have a part in decision making, and there are opportunities to grow by meeting new parents, and sharing your interests and thoughts as parents of preschool children. The following information describes the time involved in being a member of a cooperatively owned preschool.

BEFORE JOINING

The following requirements provide parents with an opportunity to increase their understanding of children and their needs. This helps you in your roles as both a parent and a teacher-assistant in the preschool, ensuring a good preschool experience for your child.

  1. Reading: Review the material provided to you (parents’ manual, orientation information etc.)
  2. Orientation: There will be special meetings, workshops and social events planned – specifically for new members.

AFTER JOINING

The following is expected of participating members:

  1. Completion of an orientation by one or both parents before starting at the preschool.
  2. Attendance of one or both parents at the monthly parent education seminar/general meeting.
  3. Regular participation in the daily routine of preschool. This includes assisting the teacher as a “duty parent”  (this varies depending on your level of participation [full or partial] the size of the class, and the age of the children.)
  4. Willingness to serve on the Executive, on a committee, or in a non-committee position (see “Job List”.)
  5. Giving assistance to the teacher and/or Executive as requested (field trips, housekeeping/school maintenance, etc.)
  6. Paying fees promptly, preferably through a series of post-dated cheques.

Orientation:

Our governing bodies require that all parents doing duty complete a 10 hour orientation. This may sound like a lot of time but we break it up into smaller segments and we keep it light and informal so it’s half educational and half social time. It’s a great way to get to know other families and the preschool and make connections within your neighbours and community.

This includes:

  • Coffee Party/Orientation: 3 hours (informal meeting at the school to get to know the new families and talk to current families about the school)
  • May Pkg/Cheque Drop off: 1 hour
  • Annual General Meeting 3 hours (this is combined with our end of year party and is always a fun evening!)
  • September Workshop 3 hours (informal meeting at the school to get to know the new families)

Total: 10 hours

After completing your ten hours, and completing and handing in your forms and fees you are ready for your first duty day, and your child is set to have fun, make friends and learn!
